Code of Conduct
At the root of our Code of Conduct is the individual and their expression and abilities. However, the moment individual expression infringes on any other person a violation has occurred and an intervention will take place.
Student Rights:
Self-expression: Students have the right to express themselves as long as it doesn't disrupt others or the learning process. This includes expressing their opinions, beliefs, and ideas in class discussions or written assignments. However, this does not include any actions that cause harm, harassment, or discrimination towards others.
Exposing inadequacies: Students have the right to question and expose inadequacies and problems with material or policies in a respectful and constructive manner. This can include questioning the validity or relevance of a particular topic or assignment, or providing feedback on the quality of the course materials.
Safe place to exercise course content: Students have the right to a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports their mastery of the course content. This can include opportunities for hands-on activities, discussions, and group work that allow students to apply their knowledge and skills in practical ways.
Student services: Students have the right to access student services that create equity and support their learning. This can include resources such as tutoring, counseling, and accommodations for students with disabilities or other special needs.
Expectations:
Time management: Students are expected to use their time properly and prioritize learning. If scheduling conflicts arise due to personal situations or other events, students are expected to communicate with their instructors and work together to find solutions that allow them to continue their studies and complete assignments on time.
Respectful behavior: Students are expected to treat themselves and others with respect and dignity. This includes refraining from harmful words or actions that cause physical, emotional, or psychological harm to others. Students are also expected to report any instances of harmful behavior or discrimination to the appropriate authorities.
Equitable treatment: Students are expected to treat every person with equity, regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs. This includes respecting diversity and embracing new experiences, and actively working to create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Focused attention: Students are expected to give their full attention and potential to their lessons and work. This means avoiding distractions and other activities that interfere with their learning or the learning of others. Accept everyone's positive behavior, individuality means diversity and new experiences.
Violations:
Addressing issues: Any issues or violations of these expectations will be addressed individually and swiftly. This can include a range of interventions, depending on the severity of the offense and the context in which it occurred.
Disruptions: Disruptions will be measured based on their impact on the learning environment and the rights of others. This includes disruptions that cause harm or harassment, as well as those that simply distract from the learning process.
Proportional resolution: The resolution to each situation will be proportional to the offense, and may include interventions such as counseling, mediation, or disciplinary action. Reparations may also be required to address any harm caused to individuals or the community, and to prevent repeated instances of the offense.
Repeated offenders will go through an intervention proportional to the offence.
