Music

Course Description

Courses intended for students without previous musical experience. It introduces music notation and basic music theory topics such as intervals, scales, keys, and chords, as well as basic rhythm skills. Performance appropriate to student abilities and interests.  Instruments, sheet music, workbooks, and lessons are provided.

Learning Objectives

1. Students will be able to read and interpret basic music notation.

2. Students will have a foundational understanding of music theory concepts such as intervals, scales, keys, and chords.

3. Students will develop basic rhythm skills and be able to perform music appropriate to their abilities and interests.

4. Students will explore the history of music and its cultural significance through an appreciation modality.

5. Students will develop skills in music composition and notation through a composition modality.

6. Students will receive individual instruction on an intermediate level in instrumental technique and repertoire through an instrumental/vocal modality.

7. Students will have the opportunity to learn and play a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, cello, ukulele, and harmonica.

8. Students will have access to online resources such as UkuTabs and 8notes for additional practice and learning opportunities.

9. Students will have the opportunity to express themselves through music and experience cultural and musical fulfillment.

Life Applications

Provide an expression outlet and musical/cultural fulfillment.

Modalities 

Appreciation:  An examination and exploration of the art and science of music making and brief survey of the history of music.

Composition:  Examines “sound” itself and various ways of building sounds into musical structures and develops skills in music notation. 

Instrumental/Vocal:  Individual instruction on intermediate level in instrumental technique and repertory.
